Do you have Hard Water?

If you live in the Region of Waterloo or around Brant County, then the answer is yes.  Most of the cities and towns around the region have water containing over 20 grains of hardness per Gallon.  As you can see by the list below, that is extremely hard water.

Water Hardness Range Classification

Soft 0 – 1 grains per gallon

Slightly Hard 1 – 3.5 grains per gallon

Moderately Hard 3.5 – 7.0 grains per gallon

Hard 7.0 – 10.5 grains per gallon

Very Hard over 10.5 grains per gallon

What is Hard Water?

Hard water results from high levels of calcium and magnesium in your water supply.  It is the most common water problem in North America.

Is Hard Water harmful?

Generally, hard water is safe for consumption.  However, it can be very detrimental to appliances, hot water heaters, faucets & plumbing, costing consumers thousands of dollars a year in repairs and replacement costs.

Hard water requires you to use more soap and cleaning products.

Studies show you use up to eight times more soap with hard water than with soft water and things aren’t as clean. The minerals in hard water cling to soap particles, sticking to everything and leaving behind soap scum and bathtub rings. Your TA Appliance Specialist can show you how a water softener can mean less time scrubbing your bathroom appliances and fixtures.  By reducing soap and detergent use, you will not only save time and money, but the environment as well. Most detergent is petroleum-based. Imagine a planet with less of the six billion dollars worth of laundry detergent we pour down our drains every year!

Hard water leaves spots on your dishes, glassware and other household surfaces.

If your dishwasher leaves spots, it’s not your soap, it’s your water. Hard water minerals cling to glasses for all to see. Don’t change your soap, change your water! Your TA Appliance Specialist can show you how a water softener can help you reduce your dishwasher detergent use and eliminate spots on your glasses.

Hard water leads to higher electric and gas bills.

Over time the heating elements in your water heater get coated with minerals from your hard water. In many cases they can form a thick pile of mineral sludge in the bottom of your water heater. That sludge covers the heating element reducing its efficiency. The sludge can also cause the heating element to fail, requiring expensive repairs.

Hard water shortens the life of your appliances.

Hard water minerals coat everything. In dishwashers they coat the heating element, plug the wash mechanisms and shorten the life of the appliance. They cause similar problems in dishwashers, washing machines and even coffee pots! Eliminate hard water minerals and increase the life of your appliances with a water softener.

Many Municipalities provide their residents with information on water hardness.  The Region of Waterloo has a great resource web site about Hard Water and Water Softeners.

Cold Weather? Start Grilling!

Cold weather? Start Grilling!

Just imagine enjoying a freshly grilled steak in the comfort of your own home on a cold, snowy, day. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Just because it’s snowy and cold outside, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t fire up your grill. Grilling outdoors can be fun and satisfying. Your barbecue doesn’t need to go into a winter hibernation, with determination and simple tips – you can turn up the heat outside at home.

Getting Ready:

  • Clear the path to and around your grill to ensure that you have clean access to and from your cooking area
  • Wear warm clothing that is fitted and close to your body – bulky gloves and scarves have a risk of catching on fire
  • Keep your propane tank full, your grill may need a few extra minutes to heat up to the proper temperature
  • Make sure you have enough light around your cooking area

Let’s Cook

  • Remember that your grill will not stay or get hot as quickly as in the summer – be patient!
  • Try to use low-maintenance recipes that don’t require you to constantly open the lid (burgers, kebabs, sausages, burgers and steaks are great ideas!). Have everything prepared ahead of time so that there is no need to go in and out of the cold.
  • Grill with your lid closed to keep the heat evenly distributed

Remember to never use your grill in an enclosed area (like your garage). Always grill in an area with open air and keep any dangerous fumes away.

Get the most out of your grill and brush the snow off. Make it a family adventure and enjoy the cold followed by a delicious, grilled meal. Let us know – would you or have you grilled in the winter? Do you have any winter barbecue recipes that you have to share? We’d love to hear your own personal winter grilling tips!

Do you know what Induction Cooking is?

Think of it as the culinary equivalent of a smart phone. Once you’ve tapped on a high-powered induction unit and watched it fire up so fast that there’s no time to chop an onion, who’s going back to slow-poke electric or unruly gas? Using magnetic coils to heat the pan, not the surface, induction saves energy and precious minutes.

Since the burner stays cool, there’s less heat in the kitchen and fewer burnt spills—and fingertips. With improved pricing, induction cooktops are moving from cult to mass-market status.  Still, they take getting used to. For one, you may need new cookware. You’ll need flat-bottom cookware with enough iron to hold a magnet—some stainless steel qualifies.  Certain manufacturers run rebates from time to time where they offer a free set of cookware with the purchase of an induction product, making the switch to induction very affordable.  An induction cooker is faster and more energy efficient than a traditional electric cooking surface. It allows instant control of cooking energy similar to gas burners. Other cooking methods use flames or red-hot heating elements; induction heating heats only the pot. Because the surface of the cook top is heated only by contact with the vessel, the possibility of burn injury is significantly less than with other methods. The induction effect does not directly heat the air around the vessel, resulting in further energy efficiencies.  Check out this great demonstration video.

The Quiet Kitchen

I have been in the industry for 5 years and the question I hear the most would have to be “Is it quiet?” This tends to be the most important feature to consumers when it comes to dishwashers and hood fans. It is surprising that above function and durability, that low noise levels are the most sought after features. Luckily most of the products in today’s market have low sound ratings and also happen to perform well and last a long time.

 LG Kitchen

YOU HAVE A QUIET DISHWASHER AND RANGE HOOD, NOW WHAT?

Now you have bought a silent dishwasher and whisper quiet range hood, and all you can hear is your fridge! Almost all refrigerators on the market are using a single speed rotary compressor. This type of compressor spins in a circular motion and for the most part has 2 speeds…ON and OFF. This style can cause a lot of noise, especially after a year or two of operation. When it starts, it is at full speed and stops hard (like your car going 100kmph and then coming to a stop and turning off. Rotary compressors are not the most durable or energy efficient. Discover more about LG products on their website or, shop LG at TA Appliances

IT’S OKAY, TA HAS A SOLUTION!

LG Electronics has another amazing innovation that will solve this issue. Two words…LINEAR COMPRESSOR. What does that even mean? Well LG’s Linear Compressor is a piston like compressor that is variable speed. It turns on and off gradually, so there is less strain on the compessor and it generates very little noise. LG’s Linear Compressor is also very efficient. If your fridge only needs to cool down a little, it can operate at 20-30%. I highly recommend purchasing one of the many LG models with this feature. I did and I am extremely happy with my purchase!

Where do you put the microwave??

KB6014MSC_3Location, location, location!  In these busy times, we all LOVE our microwaves…. but sometimes we are forced to put them where we don’t want to and end up losing valuable counter space, or having to spend more money on over-the-range models.   With over-the-range models you also may be sacrificing your venting quality.  Grease and vapour that comes from cooking, has to go somewhere and if it is not extracted properly, well, that is another topic….
